The Roslyn High community is mourning the loss of two teen tennis prodigies who passed away in May 2023. Both were 14-year-olds and had a bright future ahead. Unfortunately, they passed away after drunk driver Amandeep Singh slammed into their car on Route 106 in Jericho.
Among the four teenagers inside the 2019 Alfa Romeo, Ethan and Drew passed away, while the remaining kids, Zach Sheena and Ethan Solop, were taken to the hospital. They were checked for internal injuries; thankfully, they survived the fatal crash with no fatal injuries.
Two best friends who attended Roslyn Middle School together and were nationally-ranked tennis players were returning to their home. After beating the Syosset High School tennis team in a match, the boys had just finished a victory dinner. Sadly, their journey was cut short by a drunk driver.
Funeral services for Drew Hassenbein were held at Temple Beth Shalom in his hometown. Many friends, relatives, and well-wishers attended the ceremony to say their goodbyes. It was an emotional event, with Drew’s dad calling him a real-life superstar in his eulogy.
Drew Hassenbein’s father, Mitch Hassenbein, mentioned,
You were a real-life superstar. I looked up to you.
Likewise, Ethan Falkowitz’s funeral service was held at Temple Sinai in Roslyn. Family, friends, and relatives attended the service and paid their respects to the late teen tennis prodigy.
Ethan’s parents and brother are devastated by his untimely demise. His dad, Gary Falkowitz, reminisced how that day was the best day of his life, but tragically also last. Moreover, Ethan Falkowitz’s brother, Landon Falkowitz, attended the match with their dad and continuously said good luck to him before the game.
After the match, Gary congratulated his son in the parking lot before allowing him to have a celebratory dinner with his teammates. Sadly, that was the last time he saw his boy alive, as Ethan and Drew fell victim to a car crash.
Driver Amandeep is charged with Vehicular Manslaughter 1st Degree, Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Aggravated Vehicular Homicide, Leaving the Scene of an Auto Accident with a Fatality, DWI and two counts of Assault 2nd Degree. Hopefully, the boys will get the justice they deserve.
